Mono White Tokens and Jund emerged victorious in a top 8 that is radically diverse with a whopping 6 different archetypes! Daniel Kong takes the top spot with a concession from Arif Kamaruddin, but as far as they’re concerned, they’ve both won the GPT with the 3-round Byes extended to the top 2 players with the Decards GPT having a 42 player Trial.

For Arif, it was a joyous tournament as he finally broke his Quarterfinals losing streak, and was able to go all the way. While Daniel Kong had to fight for his top 8 spot in the Swiss rounds the hard way after a 1st-round defeat. On their way to the grand prize, Daniel Kong and his Mono White Tokens halted Christopher Lee’s Naya advance in the Quarterfinals before fighting off Chye Yian Hsiang and his ‘Kazakhistan Kontrol’ (UWR Control) to get his 3-round byes. Meanwhile Arif and his Jund had to fight off a fellow Jund player (with a Vampire twist), Icky (Mohd Ikmal Mohd Nasir) in the Quarterfinals, before winning his byes with the defeat of Boros player Alvin Chan. The other 2 Quarterfinalists are Ng Wei San and his ‘Blue Aggro’ 4-color Control who lost to Chye in a control on control matchup and Shawn Khoo’s Mono White Tokens to Alvin.

Update (Friday) - Top 8 decklists posted

Defending Champion Shamsul Bahrin does it again!

Photobucket
Champion, Shamsul Bahrin

Shamsul Bahrin takes the title of Decards Enterprise's year end major cash tournament once again. The dominance of Jund has been exaggerated - although he stood the only control player with his 'Atoibolan Control' (Esper Control) in the top 8, the rest of the top 8 consisted of only 2 Jund decks while a Mono Red Aggro/Burn, 2 Boros Bushwhacker, a Mono White Aggro/Tokens and a Blue White Tokens deck rounded off the top 8.

Photobucket
The top 8 with Decards Enterprise owner, Mr Tea. (From L-R: Irwin Leong, Woo Yit Hang, Gan Zheng Xin, Hang Sheng Kwang, Mr Tea, Dennis Yee, Chong Kin Leong, Shamsul Bahrin, Yii Terh Kuen)

After strong persuasion from his hungry and tired friends, Woo Yit Hang with his Boros Bushwhacker conceded the title to Shamsul Bahrin in the finals as Shamsul fought off Dennis Yee's Mono Red Aggro/Burn with ease after defeating Gan Zheng Xin and his Boros Bushwhacker in the quarterfinals while Woo Yit Hang halted the advance of Yii Terh Kuen's Blue/White Tokens in the other semifinals but not before he defeated Chong Kin Leong's Mono White Aggro/Tokens in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Dennis Yee defeated Irwin Leong and his Jund in the other quartefinals while Yii Terh Kuen dispatched Hang Sheng Kwang with his Jund.

Sadly Terry Soh fell short by a game to reach the finals, but won a cool US$15,000 for his troubles anyways.

Congratulations Terry Soh!

With the Eternal City of Rome providing an unforgettable backdrop, the 2009 Magic World Championships delivered thrilling games throughout the entire Top 8 and National Team competition. When the dust settled, André Coimbra of Portugal had completed the journey of a lifetime to be crowned Magic World Champion. Coimbra, armed with a Naya deck designed to beat Jund, defeated Austria’s David Reitbauer and his Jund deck in the finals.

The individual portion of Sunday was filled with recognizable names all looking for their career-defining performance, but for the National Team final, it was all about a nation-defining moment for Magic The fresh-faced team from China made up of Bo Li, Wu Tong, and Zhiyang Zhang took home the title with a victory over Austria. This marks only the second time Chinese players have made it to the Sunday stage, but it certainly could be a harbinger for a Magic explosion in China.

Congratulations are also extended to Yuuya Watanabe as the 2009 Player of the Year and Lino Burgold as the 2009 Rookie of the Year, as well as the three new inductees to the Magic Pro Tour Hall of Fame: Antoine Ruel, Kamiel Cornelissen, and Frank Karsten. Thanks to all the players, judges, and staff for making the 2009 season and World Championships so memorable, and we’ll see you again at Pro Tour–San Diego in February!

Meanwhile Team Malaysia finished 15th on the Team World Championships on the back of some solid finishes from the National Team members of Bryan Chen, Joe Soh, Wong Weng Sheng but the team failed to do well in the Team rounds, missing out on crucial points to break past the top 4.

Nonetheless, Team Malaysia will return with US$3,000 (for the team) and 2 Pro Points (per player) for their finish while Terry Soh will be fighting for US$45,000 and 25 pro points, in the the top 8 single elimination rounds that will happen not very long from now.

More information, full schedule and details below!

The 2010 Grand Prix season features 18 stops across 12 different countries, highlighted by stops in Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Toronto, and Florence. Along with playing Magic next to hundreds of other players in your region, Grand Prix offer Pro Tour invitations to the top 16 finishers and a $30,000 prize purse. This season's schedule features Grand Prix located in the same region as each Pro Tour a week prior to the big event to make it easier for traveling players to combine both tournaments into one trip.

The first six Grand Prix of the year provide invitations to Pro Tour–San Juan (May 28-30). Kicking off the 2010 season is Grand Prix–Oakland, taking place one week before Pro Tour–San Diego to make for an easy GP-PT combination trip. Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, Yokohama, Brussels, and Houston round out the rest of the San Juan set of Grand Prix from February to April, featuring Extended, Legacy, and Standard formats.

The middle set of Grand Prix feeds Pro Tour–Amsterdam (September 3-5) and runs from May to early August. Lyon, Baltimore, Sendai, Manila, and Columbus host Grand Prix in this stretch, with the event in Baltimore the week before Pro Tour–San Juan for easier travel coordination. Formats in this set include "Prosper" Sealed Deck/Booster Draft, Standard, and Legacy.

The final set of Grand Prix in 2010 runs from late August to November and feeds the first Pro Tour of 2011 (date and site to be determined). All seven of these Grand Prix are Limited, split between Magic 2011 and "Lights". For travelers en route to Pro Tour–Amsterdam, stop over in Gothenburg, Sweden the week before to make it a two-week Magic adventure. Portland, Sydney, Toronto, Bochum, Nashville, and Florence round out the season.

Along with the excitement and big prizes of the Grand Prix, each of these weekends features all types of Magic activity. From Pro Tour Qualifiers and other major public events down to 8-man pick-up drafts, it's wall-to-wall Magic when a Grand Prix comes to your town. You can also meet prominent Magic artists at each Grand Prix and have them sign your cards for an unforgettable memento of your tournament experience. Plus, every participant in each Grand Prix receives a special foil promotional Umezawa's Jitte (while supplies last).

If you're excited about the Grand Prix season, it's never been easier to play the game, see the world—and take your shot at Pro Tour glory! Become a part of the Pro Tour community by joining the Pro Tour Facebook group and share your experiences traveling the world playing Magic with your friends.
