2012 World Championship

For the first time since the creation of the Pro Tour, Magic: The Gathering will have a single tournament to determine the best player in the world: the 2012 World Championship. To accomplish this goal, the World Championship is changing from a Pro Tour-sized event to an exclusive sixteen-person tournament. These sixteen titans of Magic will battle for a $100,000 prize purse at Gen Con 2012 in Indianapolis (August 16-19). The field will be made up of the following players:

• 2011 World Champion

• 2011 Magic Online Champion (determined at the 2011 Magic Online Championship held at Magic Weekend San Francisco)

• Winners of the previous three Pro Tours (Philadelphia, Dark Ascension in Honolulu, and the second Pro Tour in 2012). Pro Tour Philadelphia champion Samuele Estratti is the first invitee to the 2012 World Championship.

• The top-ranked player from each geo-region (Asia Pacific, Europe, Japan, Latin America, and North America) in the Planeswalker Points 2012 Professional Total who are not yet invited based on the above criteria.

• The top-ranked players in the worldwide Planeswalker Points 2012 Professional Total who are not yet invited based on the above criteria sufficient to bring the total number of invited players to the 2012 World Championship to sixteen.

Welcome to Chiba, Japan and the 2010 Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This weekend marks the culmination of an amazing Pro Tour season. Who will hoist the World Champion trophy? Will the traditional powers show their strength in the National Team competition, or will a relative unknown team emerge as China did last year? Will American Brad Nelson end five years of Japanese dominance in the Player of the Year race? Who will be crowned the Magic Online World Champion? How will the event shape the Standard and Extended metagames?

All these questions and more will be answered over the next four days as 350 players from 60 countries put their Magic skills to the test. Day 1 begins with the Parade of Nations and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, followed by six rounds of Standard and two National Team rounds. The National Teams take a break on Friday, when we have six rounds of Scars of Mirrodin Booster Draft. Then Saturday features the final two team rounds and six rounds of Extended. Come Saturday night, we'll know the Top 8 individuals and the Top 2 National Teams who will be competing Sunday under the spotlights.

Sadly Terry Soh fell short by a game to reach the finals, but won a cool US$15,000 for his troubles anyways.

With the Eternal City of Rome providing an unforgettable backdrop, the 2009 Magic World Championships delivered thrilling games throughout the entire Top 8 and National Team competition. When the dust settled, André Coimbra of Portugal had completed the journey of a lifetime to be crowned Magic World Champion. Coimbra, armed with a Naya deck designed to beat Jund, defeated Austria’s David Reitbauer and his Jund deck in the finals.

The individual portion of Sunday was filled with recognizable names all looking for their career-defining performance, but for the National Team final, it was all about a nation-defining moment for Magic The fresh-faced team from China made up of Bo Li, Wu Tong, and Zhiyang Zhang took home the title with a victory over Austria. This marks only the second time Chinese players have made it to the Sunday stage, but it certainly could be a harbinger for a Magic explosion in China.

Congratulations are also extended to Yuuya Watanabe as the 2009 Player of the Year and Lino Burgold as the 2009 Rookie of the Year, as well as the three new inductees to the Magic Pro Tour Hall of Fame: Antoine Ruel, Kamiel Cornelissen, and Frank Karsten. Thanks to all the players, judges, and staff for making the 2009 season and World Championships so memorable, and we’ll see you again at Pro Tour–San Diego in February!

Terry Soh returns to the spotlight of the brightest stage of highest level Magic-playing as he succeeded in breaking through the top 8 at the Rome 2009 World Championships in the first Pro Tour top 8 in the 77 event history of the Tour without an American or Japanese player!

David Reitbauer, William Cavaglieri, André Coimbra, Terry Soh, Manuel Bucher, Marijn Lybaert, Bram Snepvangers, and Florian Pils have their sights set on Worlds glory, along with National Teams from the Czech Republic, China, the Netherlands, and Austria. Meanwhile Team Malaysia finished 15th on the Team World Championships on the back of some solid finishes from the National Team members of Bryan Chen, Joe Soh, Wong Weng Sheng but the team failed to do well in the Team rounds, missing out on crucial points to break past the top 4.

Nonetheless, Team Malaysia will return with US$3,000 (for the team) and 2 Pro Points (per player) for their finish while Terry Soh will be fighting for US$45,000 and 25 pro points, in the the top 8 single elimination rounds that will happen not very long from now.

Finland’s Antti Malin and the U.S. team of Michael Jacob, Sam Black, and Paul Cheon are your 2008 World Champions!



Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Team Malaysia as Au Yong Wai Kin, Chong Kin Leong and Terry Soh finished 5th on the Team Championship, missing out the top 4 single elimination rounds on tiebreakers.

Each of them will receive US$1,500 for their 5th place finish.

Malin and his Faeries deck defeated a resurgent Jamie Parke and his Five-Color Control in the finals to take home the World Champion trophy and the $45,000 first prize. Malin defeated Akira Asahara and Hannes Kerem en route to his first major championship.

Team USA captured the team title on the backs of wins by Black and Cheon in the Team Finals. Black defeated Rookie of the Year Aaron Nicastri in the Extended matchup, while Cheon outlasted Justin Cheung a the Legacy duel featuring an epic Standstill that finally cracked in Cheon’s favor. That win rendered the outcome of the Standard matchup between Jacob and Brandon Lau moot in the best-of-three Finals.

That’s not all the hardware that was handed out over the weekend. Shuhei Nakamura fended off all challengers to win the 2008 Player of the Year trophy, and the Pro Tour Hall of Fame inducted its five newest members: Dirk Baberowski, Mike Turian, Jelger Wiegersma, Olivier Ruel, and Ben Rubin. Nicastri’s 17th-place finish in the individual standings and runner-up status in the team competition cemented his Rookie of the Year, culminating a mad dash around the world for Pro Points that started back when he won the Australia National Championship.

Congratulations to all the champions crowned this weekend in Memphis. As the curtain comes down on this 2008 Pro Tour season, all we have to say is thank you...thank you very much.

Magic The Gathering Online is offering a series of tournaments to qualify for a Tournament Worlds Qualifier Tournament where the winner wins an invite to the World Championship 2008, as well as hotel accommodation and flight for two.

The 2008 Magic: The Gathering World Championships will take place December 11 – 14, 2008 in Memphis, TN, USA. The World Championships is the highest-level competition that Magic™ has to offer.

The Magic Online World Championships qualifier is a one-time opportunity which gives a chance for you to qualify and compete in the most exciting Magic: The Gathering tournament of the year. The winner of the qualifier and a guest will experience Worlds like Magic's elite: airfare, hotel, and a chance to become the 2008 World Champion.

Dates: Wednesday, October 8, 2008 through Tuesday October 14, 2008.

Thirty-two (32) Daily Events will be designated "Worlds QT Prelim" events. Each Worlds QT Prelim will invite the Top 8 finishers to play in the 2008 World Championships Qualifier Tournament on Saturday October 18, 2008 at 9:00 AM PST. After the completion of the scheduled Top 8 Qualifier tournaments we will run Last Chance to Qualify Queues for approximately 36 hours running from Wednesday October 15 after the weekly downtime (approximately 12:00 PM PST) until 11:59 PM PST Thursday October 16.

These 8-player single elimination queues will award the 1st place finisher an invitation to compete in the 2008 Magic Online World Championships Qualifier. No other prizes will be awarded in these queues.

Dates: Wednesday, October 15 after the weekly downtime through Thursday October 16, 2008 12:00 am

Formats: Constructed – Standard
Limited – SHM-EVE Sealed
