2011 Malaysian Nationals Finals
Lee Eing Yung (Valakut-Twin) vs Hiew Chee Choong (White Weenie)

Game 1

Photobucket

Lee had a rocky start as he mulligan twice while Hiew led off with a turn 2 Lynx along with a Marsh Flats. Hiew's Lynx punched in for 4 as he cracked his Marsh Flats before summoning a Gideon’s Lawkeeper.

Lee then summoned an Oracle of Mul Data to see a Deceiver Exarch on top of his library as Hiew’s Lynx punched in for another 4 before a Hero of Bladehold joined Hiew's board. Lee’s Oracle then revealed a Misty Rainforest which got played, revealing Deceiver Exarch on top, which led Lee to crack the Rainforest for an Island. He then found a Terramorphic Expanse to play on top, which gave way to a Harrow.

As Hiew tried to attack, Lee cast Harrow sacrificing the Expanse to summon a Deceiver Exarch to hold back the Hero of Bladehold, leaving an Overgrown Battlement on top. Hiew then exiled the Exarch an Oblivion Ring but Lee then summoned Primeval Titan to threaten to put the game out of Hiew’s reach.

Hiew then summoned Student of Warfare and used his Tectonic Edge on Lee’s Valakut. Misty Rainforest was revealed and played after Lee drew the revealed Exarch to see Avenger of Zendikar on top. Before he could attack with his Primeval Titan, Hiew tapped it down.

Lee then Explore-d to draw his revealed Avenger to reveal a Valakut that got played which then revealed a Primeval Titan which eventually got summoned on the following turn. The Titan killed off Hiew’s Hero of Bladehold and Gideon’s Lawkeeper with the help of his Valakut triggers.

The writing was on the wall for Hiew but it took an Avenger of Zendikar to get 12 plant tokens before he was finally willing throw in the towel.

Hiew Chee Choong 0 – Lee Eing Yung 1

Game 2

Hiew’s first turn Steppe Lynx and 2nd turn Student of Warfare delivered some quick beats on Lee as he Explore-d into a Misty Rainforest. Lee however then played Harrow into a Deceiver Exarch to put Hiew’s offense to a screeching halt as he tapped down the Lynx and blocked the 3/3 Student.

Primeval Titan was then summoned and along with Harrow, quickly made short work of Hiew and his title challenge, and with that, Lee Eing Yung is 2011 Malaysian National Champion!

2011 Malaysian Nationals Semifinals
Au Yong Wai Kin (Valakut) vs Hiew Chee Choong (White Weenie)

Game 1

Photobucket
Au Yong Wai Kin

Hiew started off with a first turn Steppe Lynx which was quickly followed by a levelled Student of Warfare on the 2nd turn before a 3rd turn Honor of the Pure quickly put the pressure on Au Yong who only had Rampant Growth and Cultivate to show.

Hiew then played Tectonic Edge to destroy a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and added Gideon’s Lawkeeper to his team. Au Yong tried to find some breathing space with Obstinate Baloth, but that plan got Dismember-ed as the players pack the cards in for game 2.

Au Yong Wai Kin 0 – Hiew Chee Choong 1

Game 2

Hiew played a first turn Student of Warfare, thought hard before levelling twice, shaking his head as he does, and as he expected, a Lightning Bolt came thundering down.

Au Yong's Overgrown Battlement is followed by another Student of Warfare and Gideon’s Lawkeeper from Hiew. Au Yong’s Harrow fetched two Mountains before he Pyroclasm-ed Hiew’s team away before Primeval Titan and Harrow quickly closed the game away in Au Yong’s favour to split the match.

Au Yong Wai Kin 1 – Hiew Chee Choong 1

Game 3

Hiew Chee Choong

Hiew summoned a couple of Steppe Lynx to set a very quick clock as Au Yong received a Slow Play Warning from the Head Judge as he agonized over his options before he settled on a Rampant Growth. Student of Warfare was summoned and gained a level, with Hiew once again conspicuously leaving a single white mana source untapped since the last couple of turns while Au Yong then summoned a pair of Overgrown Battlements.

Hiew’s Marsh Flats however spelt bad news for Au Yong, and with the Student gaining a 2nd level, Hiew sent them all into the red zone. Another long moment spent by Au Yong to organize his defense against the onslaught led to another Slow Play Warning which prompted Au Yong to block the Student with his Battlement, while taking 8 damage from the cats.

Au Yong then summoned an Avenger of Zendikar who made 4 2/3 Plant tokens through a fetchland, but a fully levelled Student of Warfare and a Brave the Elements was enough to push Hiew through to the finals!

2011 Malaysian Nationals Quarterfinals
Nico Surinindran (Valakut) vs Hiew Chee Choong (White Weenie)

Game 1

Photobucket

Hiew started off the game with a Gideon’s Lawkeeper as Nico summoned a Birds of Paradise. Hiew denied Nico mana acceleration by tapping the bird with his Lawkeeper on the following turn but Nico could land an Overgrown Battlement anyway.

A Hero of Bladehold was summoned onto Hiew’s side of the battlefield before Nico summoned a 2nd Battlement to enable the first to tap for a Rampant Growth. Gideon’s Lawkeeper tapped the untapped Battlement and attacked with his Hero to take 7 from Nico before a 2nd Hero of Bladehold entered the battlefield for Hiew.

A Slagstorm cleared the board of soldiers, and along with an Avenger of Zendikar - Nico established a foothold on the game with 5 2/3s Plant tokens thanks to a Verdant Catacombs. An Oblivion Ring prevented the plants from getting any bigger, but Nico’s Plant token army kills off both Hero of Bladeholds as Hiew pushed Nico’s lifetotals to 2. Hiew then summoned a Mirran Crusader who threatened to close the game for him but a Lightning Bolt was enough to put that plan on hold.

Both players played draw-go for a while as Hiew added a Steppe Lynx and Gideon’s Lawkeeper to his side of the battlefield, while Nico found lands with Cultivate. Steppe Lynx killed off a Battlement through an Arid Mesa before Nico summoned an Oracle of Mul Daya to reveal a Slagstorm off the top of the library. Oblivion Ring took the Oracle away as Nico Slagstorms away Hiew’s team.

Nico’s reprieve was short lived however, as Hiew summoned a couple of Squadron Hawks to send the match to game 2.

Hiew Chee Choong 1 – Nico Surinindran 0

Game 2

Hiew’s turn 1 Steppe Lynx gets Lightning Bolt-ed while his 2nd turn Student of Warfare gets Pyroclasm-ed. His 3rd turn Gideon’s Lawkeeper managed to stick around however along with a 4th turn Hero of Bladehold while all Nico could do was to cast Green Sun’s Zenith for 4 to fetch an Oracle of Mul Daya, revealing a Mountain on top.

Hiew’s soldiers and knight slams in for 9 points off Nico before Hiew chose to Tectonic Edge Nico’s Valakut and sent the Oracle to oblivion through an Oblivion Ring. Nico then summoned Primeval Titan but it was all for naught as Hiew tapped the titan with his Lawkeeper before he cast Honor of the Pure and sent his team to kill off Nico’s shot for a spot on the 2011 Malaysian national team.

Quarterfinals
Chye Yian Hsiang vs Matthew Wong

Chye started the game after Wong took a mulligan but he had the first play with an Arbor Elf but Chye had a Stoneforge Mystic to follow up with, fetching a Sword of Feast and Famine. Wong further develop his position with an Explore and a Fauna Shaman off the extra land drop the sorcery gave him.

A Duress from Chye saw two Forests and a Beast Within in Wong's hand and the instant hit the bin. The Sword entered the battlefield via Chye's Mystic, and on the following turn, an Inquisition of Kozilek which was Preordain-ed allowed Chye to check if the coast was clear or even empty out Wong's hand showed Chye an Eldrazi Temple and a Forest, prompting him to hit away with his equipped Mystic, untapping all of his lands to summon Jace the Mind Sculptor's help to ensure Wong did not draw anything relevant with his +2 ability.

Wong drew the card graciously left on top by Chye, exclaiming "Awesome!" as he quickly passed the turn after knocking Jace down to 2 loyalty with his elves and soon was yet again at the receiving end of an attacking Mystic and Creeping Tar Pit. Jace left another card in top on Wong's library as Chye summoned Squadron Hawks to defend Jace and with the help of Jace's unsummon ability and Into the Roil slowly rips away Wong's board with the help of the Sword's discard effect, which eventually convinced Wong to scoop it in for game 2.

Chye 1-0 Wong

Game 2

Chye is the one to take a mulligan on the draw this time as Wong laid down a Joraga Treespeaker on his first turn. Turn 2 saw the Treespeaker levelled up to summon a Fauna Shaman as Chye could nothing until his second turn as he cast Go for the Throat on the Treespeaker, a turn too late. An Elvish Archdruid is found via Fauna Shaman as Wong discarded an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. The Archdruid failed to enter the battlefield as Chye had a Mana Leak for it but double Tectonic Edge stripped Chye of his mana sources as the elves grew more and bigger with yet another Elvish Archdruid despite Chye’s 2nd Go for the Throat. An Acidic Slime destroyed another land, and soon enough Chye was packing it in for the last game.

Chye 1-1 Wong

Game 3

Chye started the game but Wong had the first play with a Joraga Treespeaker, and this time Chye had an Into the Roil to disrupt Wong’s mana development and waste his turn as Wong tried to level her up. Preordain grabbed a Stoneforge Mystic who inturn grabbed a Batterskull while Wong’s Treespeaker met her demise via Disfigure as Wong tried to level her up. Llanowar Elves and Elvish Archdruid entered the battlefield as Batterskull joined the fray through the Mystic. Jace the Mind Sculptor sent off the Archdruid back into Wong’s hand as Chye’s 4/4 Germ token and his Mystic smashes in for 5 damage.

With Chye tapped out, Wong took the opportunity to land a Primeval Titan who brought into play a Tectonic Edge and Eldrazi Temple. Undeterred, Chye ‘Brainstormed’ with Jace before summoning a Stoneforge Mystic and fetched Sword of Feast and Famine to allow Chye to smash past the Primeval Titan with his well-equipped Germ token, taking Wong down to 8 with Chye standing at 28. Wong discarded an Elvish Archdruid and after a long consideration, passed his turn.

Wong attacked with his Titan into the Protection from Green Germ token, sacrificing the Titan to fetch an Eye of Ugin and Eldrazi Temple and buffing Chye’s lifetotals to 34.On the following turn, Chye used Jace to bounce his Mystic to search for another Batterskull before attacking with his Germ token, but a Summoning Trap from Wong allowed him to put into the battlefield an Acidic Slime after much consideration to destroy the Sword of Feast and Famine and kill off the germ with his creature with deathtouch. Before taking his turn, Wong destroyed Chye’s Creeping Tar Pit with his Tectonic Edge and after much counting of his mana sources, played a Primeval Titan to fetch two more Tectonic Edges.

Chye flashes in his 2nd Batterskull with an active Mystic as Chye used Jace to draw him out of the current board position, but with Wong finding an Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre with Eye of Ugin, and between the annihilator’s ability and Tectonic Edges further demolishing Chye’s mana base, Chye couldn’t do anything but concede the game and match.

Chye 1-2 Wong

Finals - Ryan Luo vs Hiew Chee Choong

Both players started with 7 cards and a first turn Goblin Guide, but Luo, who played first, chipped two off Hiew while he elected to keep his on defence. A Lightning Bolt on his Guide threw Hiew to 15 after a fetchland activation, while Luo added a Steppe Lynx to his board who died to Hiew’s Lightning Bolt in response to a landfall trigger from Luo. In the meantime, Luo ‘sGuide has been hard at work, chipping off Hiew’s lifetotals to 12. Things were not looking good for Luo however, despite the board advantage as Hiew was stuck at 2 mana, and clearly holding a lot of gas. Luo‘s Guide picked up a Sword of Body and Mind which started to gobble up blockers after blockers from Hiew, unwilling to take a hit from the Sword.

Meanwhile, Hiew had a Bonehoard in hand after fetching it with a Mystic, who had died to a Bolt before Hiew could cheat the equipment into play with just 2 lands. A second Mystic however found him his own Sword of Body and Mind.

When Hiew started seeing his lands and the game seemed to be slipping away from Luo‘s grasp however, Luo drew a Koth of the Hammer, and set it to work, knocking Hiew to 8. But by the time Koth hit play, Hiew managed to untap with a Mystic and a potential 6/6 blocker flashing into the battlefield stunts Luo’s willingness to commit to the red zone. Attack he did anyway, with the help of Teetering Peaks, it took down the 6/6 Germ.

Hiew then put his Bonehoard to great use as he finally turned the tables around, pressing onto the offensive, and always keeping Koth off 5 loyalty counters instead of killing him outright, having saw another copy of Koth off the top thanks to his Guide.

Unable to draw into any form of defence, Hiew soon packed it in as his wave after wave of Hawks, Mystic with Bonehoard and Sword took the game down for Hiew.

Hiew 1 – 0 Luo

Game 2

Luo started off with a Steppe Lynx but Hiew had a Bolt before it could threaten his lifetotals, and all Luo could do was followed it up with back to back Kor Firewalkers. Hiew had back to back Steppe Lynx however, and both players traded damage until Hiew kept his Evolving Wilds behind to stop Luo’s Kors from punching through.

Things however went from bad to worse for Luo as he misses landdrops, allowing Hiew to develop his board almost unimpeded, throwing down Squadron Hawks, Mystics and equipment

Very soon, Luo had to start chump blocking Hiew’s creatures as a never ending stream of lands kept Hiew’s Lynx bigger than Luo could handle and eventually Luo got overwhelmed so much, Hiew could easily finish him off with double Lightning Bolt, giving an elated Hiew his plane ticket to Philadelphia and his invite to the Pro Tour!

Hiew 2 – 0 Luo

Semifinals – Hiew Chee Choong vs Stanley Sim

Sim won the dice roll but Hiew got the first play with a Goblin Guide chips off Sim’s lifetotals 2 at a time while giving Sim free lands as his opponent plays back to back Squadron Hawks. A Stoneforge Mystic fetched an Adventuring Gear and got geared up and took Sim to 11 while the Hawks double teamed to take out the GoblinGuide. Sim’s own Mystic found a Mortarpod along with another Hawk to to shore up his defences.

Arid Mesa pumped Hiew’s Mystic as Sim chump with his own Mystic before summoning an Ember Hauler. Gideon Jura forces Hiew to divert his damage to him as Sim used his Hawk to keep the damage to Gideon low as Hiew thought hard before adding another Hauler to the board.

Jace the Mind Sculptor saw a Plains on top of Hiew’s library which was left on top after much consideration as Gideon provokes all of Hiew’s creatures to focus on him yet again and cast the Mortarpod into the battlefield.

Squadron hawk helped Hiew reload his hand as Sim’s Germ chumped but Gideon goes down to 4 anyways. Desperate to hang on, Sim dug for an answer with Preordain and sent both cards down to draw a fresh card, after which Jace drew him another 3 and an answer was found.

A Day of Judgement prompted Hiew to send 4 damage to Sim with the Ember Haulers. Switching gears, Sim went on the offensive with his Gideon to send Hiew to 11. A Lightning Bolt with his last untapped mana during that turn to the dome got Mana Leak’ed and then on his following turn, Hiew thought long and hard before casting a kicked Burst Lightning to send Sim’s lifetotals tumbling to 3.

Sensing impending doom, Sim cast a Hawk and Oust it himself to gain 3 life to buffer himself while Gideon picked up a Sword of Feast and Famine to take Hiew to 3 and discard a hawk. Jace fetched the Hawk back from the library and it picked up the Mortapod and the Sword.

Visibly shaken, Hiew had to play defence as he summoned two Hawks and a Spike Elder. Jace unsummoned one of the hawks and when an Inkmoth Nexus tried to pick up the Mortapod, Hiew delayed his demise with a Burst Lightning but it was all for naught as Sim calmly animated his Gideon, wore the Mortapod and took away Hiew’s only flying blocker to clear the path to his Sword’ed Hawk to finish Hiew off.

Sim 1 - 0 Hiew

Game 2

Hiew starts off with yet another Goblin Guide who quickly got Oust’ed but not before chipping 2 off and giving Sim a land. Hiew revealed that he had a 2nd Guide which went to work on SIm’s life totals but first revealed a Condemn which would make short work of him a turn later. When the first Guide tried to return to the battlefield, he got denied by Sim who flashed a Mana Leak.

Jace the Mind Sculptor unsummoned an Ember Hauler but Koth of the Hammer from Hiew made short work of Jace. Sim is not done defending though as Gideon Jura shows up to put up a defence to the onslaught. A third Goblin Guide with Koth’s mountain dispatched of the roadblock as Koth threatened to go off on his ‘ultimate’.

Sim had a Stoneforge Mystic to make sure he doesn’t however, fetching a Mortarpod to send Koth to 4. Hiew continued working on Sim’s lifetotals again as Sim chumped with his Mystic to go to 8. A second Stoneforge Mystic brought a Sylvok Lifestaff to make a 2/2 Squadron Hawk with a Lifestaff and Mortarpod to knock Koth to 3.

Bonehoard then entered play as a 6/6 as Koth animates another Mountain to continue to pressure Sim. Divine Offering negates the Bonehoard and the attack as Hiew could only add a late Steppe Lynx into his side of the board. Sim tries to keep Koth in check with his well equipped Hawk and Mystic and added two more Hawks into his side of the board.

Ever wary, Sim used the equipped Hawk to kill off the Lynx to go to 11 thanks to the Lifestaff and eventually managed to kill off Koth with the seemingly never ending torrent of Hawks.

A Spikeshot Elder managed to resolve onto an empty board, and got himself killed by the Mortarpod’ed Hawk as he tried to take down the bird on his own.

“Finally killed off all the Hawks, just top deck lands for the rest of the game please,” quipped Hiew as he managed to resolve a Koth, paying the 3 mana for Sim’s Mana Leak.

A Mountain was untapped with Koth but Hiew elected to not attack with it. When the Mystic tried to pick up the Lifestaff however, Hiew sent a Lightning Bolt onto her.

Somehow Hiew’s curse was effective as Sim could draw nothing but lands and when Hiew could go ultimate with Koth on the next turn, Sim scooped up his cards to prepare for the third game.

Hiew 1 – 1 Sim

Game 3

Sim kept a sketchy hand with 2 Inkmoth Nexus as his only mana sources as Hiew took a mulligan but yet again started off with a first turn Goblin Guide. Sim’s draws were brutal as he failed to draw his crucial colored sources until it was way too late, as Hiew laid down Steppe Lynx, and continued the beat down.

A Plains finally came off the top of the deck as Sim laid down a Squadron Hawk to hope to stop the bleeding with 2 untapped mana representing Mana Leak gave Hiew pause as he shakes his head, taps 4 of his lands, slammed down his Hero of Oxid Ridge and asked, “Mana Leak?”

Sim shook his head, and packed his cards – sending Hiew into the Finals.

Hiew 2 – 1 Sim

Jason won the dice roll and elected to go first but he had a rough start as he took a mulligan twice to settle down on a 5 card hand. Missing a land drop, Justin was happy to draw a Forest on his 4th turn to summon a Sprouting Thrinax, only to have it sent to the graveyard thanks to a Lightning Bolt from Ken.

Ken’s Bloodbraid Elf cascaded into a Lightning Bolt to send Jason to 16 (after a fetch-land activation), and Ken chose to let the elf stay on the defense. Jason drew and played a Raging Ravine before he cast a Lightning Bolt on Ken’s 3/2 elf to knock down Ken’s defenses as his Saproling token army sent Ken’s life totals to 16. A Maelstrom Pulse made quick work of that small army however, while Jason followed it up with a Bloodbraid Elf of his own, revealing cards off the top in trepidation, and his worst fear became true as he revealed a Terminate to his disgust.

Ken slammed down a Broodmate Dragon the turn after but the cascade was in Jason’s favor this time as the dragons got killed by a Bituminous Blast that cascaded into a Maelstrom Pulse. Ken was not done pushing yet however as a Sylvan Ranger fetched a Swamp with a Sarkhan the Mad turning her into a 5/5 dragon. Another timely Pulse dealt with Sarkhan but the 5/5 dragon token threat still loam in the skies.

Ken attacked with his animated Raging Ravine and Dragon to send Jason to 11 as the Ravine met a Lightning Bolt. A meager defense in the form of a Putrid Leech is dealt with by a Pulse of Ken’s while the dragon’s existence got Terminate-d but an animated Lavaclaw Reaches sent Jason to 9. A Bituminous Blast cascaded into Blighting on Ken’s Lavaclaw Reaches emptied Ken’s hand and board but not before Ken fired a Lightning Bolt at Jason to send him to 6. Jason’s Raging Ravine took large chunks of Ken’s life totals before a Terminate of Ken’s put an end to that but a Bloodbraid Elf from Jason was more than enough to put him through game 2 with a win.

Jason Ng 1 – Ken Lim 0

Game 2

Ken led off the game with a bumpy start as he missed land drops while Jason had a Sprouting Thrinax which was followed up by an Obstinate Baloth. Animated Raging Ravine joined the attackers soon after as Ken crumbles to the pressure, not being able to put up any form of a defense. Ken later revealed his hand filled with multiple Thrinaxes and lots of gas, and all it was missing was the crucial 3rd land.

Jason Ng vs Joe Soh

Joe Soh

Game 1

Joe won the dice roll and elected to start first but both players started off with a mulligan to 6. Joe led off with a Khalni Heart Expedition while a Bloodbraid Elf brought a Sprouting Thrinax for Jason. The Thrinax died to a Lightning Bolt while Cultivate ramp Joe’s mana. A Blightning forced Joe to discard a Forest and an Oracle of Mul Daya while the Thrinax sent Joe to 14.

An Avenger of Zendikar created a 7 Plant tokens shaped roadblock for Jason as a plant token sacrificed himself to block a Thrinax valiantly while a 2nd Blightning killed off the rest of Joe’s hand. A Forest off the top gave them all +1/+1 counters and did 11 damage in an attack, but a Maelstrom Pulse put an end to that and Joe had another Sprouting Thrinax to worry about.

The 2 Thrinaxes went all the way unopposed as Joe’s deck didn’t not offer any form of defense and an end of turn Bituminous Blast on his own Thrinax that cascaded into a Lightning Bolt ended the game in Jason’s favor.

Jason Ng 1 – Joe Soh 0

Game 2

A first turn Duress from Jason revealed a hand of an Obstinate Baloth, Cultivate, 2 Mountains, a Forest and a Lightning Bolt off Joe’s hand. The Cultivate was sent off Joe’s hand but a top deck’ed Rampant Growth allowed Joe to summon an Obstinate Baloth the following turn to put Joe to 24 although it was Terminate-d soon after.

Bloodbraid Elf hit an empty cascade with Jason revealing a Doom Blade as Joe went on the offence with a Raging Ravine which survived to knock 4 life points off Jason. Jason then cast a Master of the Wild Hunt while Joe summoned a Siege-Gang Commander.

Jason tried to kill the Commander with the Master’s activated ability but Joe killed the wolf token in response, ensuring the 2 damage does not go through to the Commander. Jason then played a Maelstrom Pulse to finish off the rest of the goblin tokens a tad bit too late and added a Putrid Leech to his side of the board.

An Avenger of Zendikar made 7 plant tokens and they became 2/3s with the help of a Terramorphic Expanse. Bloodbraid Elf brought along a Sprouting Thrinax and not the Pulse Jason eagerly wanted but a Terminate made sure the plant tokens does not become any bigger.

Joe animated a Ravine and attacked with his whole army. A big blood bath later and thanks to Siege-Gang Commander activation and a Mountain triggering off the Valakut, Jason’s game 2 is over.

Jason Ng 1 – Joe Soh 1

After some amount of discussion between Jason and the judges, Jason is made to replace his foil Sprouting Thrinax copies that were really bent, and before long the game soon continued.

Game 3

Jason quickly chose to take a mulligan while Joe thought long and hard before choosing to mulligan as well. Joe started off with a Khalni Heart Expedition while Jason had a Sprouting Thrinax as his first play. Joe had a Cultivate while Jason summoned Bloodbraid Elf who cascaded into a Putrid Leech as his Thrinax and elf swung in for 6. An Obstinate Baloth helped shift Joe’s life to 18. Jason attacked Joe with his Leech and Thrinax and elf which saw the Baloth going up against the Leech who died to a Lightning Bolt when Jason tried to pump him.

A second Thrinax joined the fray as a Siege-Gang Commander entered the battlefield for Joe. A late Duress revealed that Joe only had a Rampant Growth and a Forest in hand, the Growth being sent off the hand as Jason’s army thrashed in. While the Commander helped to delay Joe’s impending doom, his deck offered no help as Jason’s Sarkhan the Mad turned the battle into an even more 1-sided affair as Jason crashed his way through Joe to book his place in the Finals.

Jason Ng vs Kong Chong Teng

Game 1

Jason’s Putrid Leech hit in for 4 in 2 attacks as both players added Sprouting Thrinax to their board, who traded with each other as the pumped Leech took an additional 4 life points off Kong in the absence of open red mana sources. Jason’s Master of the Wild Hunt quickly died to a Maelstrom Pulse but Jason’s Bloodbraid Elf cascaded into a Blightning caused Kong to discard an Eldrazi Monument and Blighting as Jason’s army attacked, and although Kong survived the initial assault, he couldn’t stop the second wave as Jason’s animated Raging Ravine joined the fray to hit for lethal.

Jason Ng 1 – Kong Chong Teng 0

Game 2

Kong led off with a Putrid Leech that went unopposed, single handedly taking Jason to 13 before Jason summoned a Sprouting Thrinax followed by a Master of the Wild Hunt. Kong had a Thrinax of his own and it attacked the following turn along with the Leech. Jason’s Thrinax blocked the leech, made Kong pay 2 life points to kill off the Thrinax while his own Thrinax took Jason to 10. Master of the Wild Hunt then died to a Lightning Bolt while the Saproling Tokens died to Maelstrom Pulse. A Blightning ripped Kong’s hand off a Leech and Bloodbraid Elf but Kong’s offense is still relentless as Jason couldn’t find the means to muster a defense to Kong’s attacks. Another Bolt and Terminate delayed his demise, but when Jason had to rely on the cascade on his Bituminous Blast to reveal another removal, it didn’t and Kong handily won the game.

Jason Ng 1 – Kong Chong Teng 1

Game 3

Things look bleak for Kong as he kept a 5 card hand after Jason kept a 6. Kong’s Putrid Leech met a Terminate as Jason summoned an Obstinate Baloth to go to 24 but it died to a Maelstrom Pulse. A Sarkhan the Mad from Jason dug out a Sprouting Thrinax but died soon after to a Maelstrom Pulse. Jason then played a Blightning to Kong’s surprise, and ripped him off a Grave Titan and Maelstrom Pulse, to gasps from the on-looking audience. When Jason summoned multiple Thrinaxes while all Kong could muster was lands off the top of his deck, the writing was on the wall.

Thank you Wizards of the Coast and Ray "blisterguy" Walkinshaw for the opportunity to grace the pages of Wizards official coverage once again in Grand Prix Manila 2010 by covering a Quarterfinals and a Semifinals match! To be able to sit in the top 8 matches area and write is one of the most awesome things in Magic I've ever done (second being doing the exact same thing in Grand Prix KL 2010).

Grand Prix Manila 2010 Top 4 competitors - L-R: Yuuya Watanabe, Naoki Nakada, Taufik Indrakesuma, Gerald Camangon

My apologies for the amateur level work, but I hope some of you at least had enjoyed reading the coverage reports as much as I had writing them. :)

Covering the matches had really brighten up my disastrous performance at the Grand Prix, ending up 92nd, despite the highlight of my performance being playing at table 1 against Shouta Yasooka (yup, lost that one) late into day 1.

My coverage work will be reposted below, originally appearing on the official coverage here.

Once again, thank you very much Wizards of the Coast and Ray "blisterguy" Walkinshaw!

(Now, time to work harder on being the person in the coverage, instead of being the person doing the coverage.)

Quarterfinals - Taufik Indrakesuma vs Yuuta Takahashi
by QJ Wong

Takahashi won the dice roll but quickly sent his opening 7 for a fresh 6, while Indrakesuma kept his opening hand. Takahashi led off the match with a Putrid Leech while Indrakesuma spent his time setting up his combo with a Halimar Depths and a Khalni Garden. Takahashi attempted to take 4 off Indrakesuma as he gave his Putrid Leech +2/+2 but it was returned into his hand by Indrakesuma's Into the Roil, forcing Takahashi to re-summon it.

Indrakesuma then followed it up with a Jace, the Mind Sculptor, which allowed him to Brainstorm for free. Not taking any chances, Takahashi killed Indrakesuma's Plant token with a Lightning Bolt while his pumped Putrid Leech killed off Jace, before summoning a second Putrid Leech.

Indrakesuma had a second Jace however, and after another virtual Brainstorm, he played a Khalni Garden that gave him another Plant token. Takahashi killed off the Plant with a Maelstrom Pulse this time, and once again, killed Indrakesuma's Jace with a pumped Putrid Leech while the second Putrid Leech was also pumped to take 4 off Indrakesuma.

A 3rd Khalni Garden however, spelled doom for Takahashi as Indrakesuma cast Polymorph on his Plant token, which brought in an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn into the battlefield, and all Takahashi could do was scoop up his cards and start side-boarding.

Indrakesuma 1 – Takahashi 0

Takahashi quickly chose to keep his opening 7 while Indrakesuma had to take a mulligan. Takahashi went first but Indrakesuma got the game going with a Ponder as he chose to shuffle his library before drawing from the spell. A second turn Duress from Takahashi revealed Indrakesuma's hand of

2x Into the Roil,

Awakening Zone,

Flashfreeze,

Island and

Misty Rainforest.

Takahashi forced Indrakesuma to discard his Awakening Zone while a second Duress the turn after revealed a freshly drawn Deprive in addition to the cards before, with the Deprive being the card discarded this time.

Indrakesuma then cast a top-decked Awakening Zone, which drew a cringe from Takahashi. After considering his options Takahashi cast a Mind Rot, which forced Indrakesuma to discard 2 copies of his Into the Roil and played a land that entered the battlefield tapped, which left him with no untapped mana sources. Knowing that there's nothing Takahashi could do to stop his combo, Indrakesuma could only grin widely as he showed Takahashi the Polymorph he just drew off the top of the deck that forced Takahashi to scoop up his cards in clear frustration.

Indrakesuma 2 – Takahashi 0

Semifinals - Naoki Nakada vs Yuuya Watanabe
by QJ Wong

Watanabe won the dice roll and after some consideration, chose to keep his opening 7, while Nakada took a mulligan to a hand of 6. Watanabe summoned a Noble Hierarch on his second turn off his first turn Seaside Citadel as Nakada summoned a mana accelerator of his own in the form of Lotus Cobra. An Elspeth, Knight-Errant gave Watanabe a Soldier token while Nakada summoned a Knight of the Reliquary.

Another Noble Hierarch helped Watanabe's Soldier token attack for 6 with the help of Elspeth's +3/+3 and flying ability. Watanabe then cast an Oblivion Ring to exile Nakada's Cobra. An Elspeth of Nakada's own sent both Planewalkers into the graveyard but Watanabe had another Elspeth on his following turn to help take another 6 off Nakada as Watanabe emptied his hand as he summoned a Birds of Paradise.

Nakada made his knight of Reliquary grow bigger as he searched up lands but the Knight could do little as Watanabe animated his Celestial Colonnade, pumped his soldier token with his Elspeth, and then attacked with his team. All Nakada could do was to animate his own Celestial Colonnade to trade Watanabe's, but he had to take another 4 from the Soldier token in the process. Nakada drew no answer as all he could do was watch as Watanabe animated his second Colonnade and pumped his Soldier token again to attack for the win.

Nakada 0 – Watanabe 1

Nakada promptly chose to keep his opening 7 while Watanabe chose to send his back after he mulled over it for a while. Watanabe then agonized over his 6-card hand before he chose to take another mulligan to begrudgingly settle on a 5-card hand.

A first turn Birds of Paradise led to a 2nd turn Knight of Reliquary from Nakada but Watanabe exiled it with a Path to Exile. Nakada then summoned a second Birds of Paradise which Watanabe attempted to Oust but Nakada had a Negate to counter that spell. A Baneslayer Angel from Nakada presented a threat to Watanabe but a Journey to Nowhere dealt with it before Nakada exiled the enchantment with an Oblivion Ring to get his Baneslayer back into the battlefield along with a newly summoned Lotus Cobra.

Nakada's team of Baneslayer Angel and Lotus Cobra hit Watanabe for 7 but an Elspeth, Knight-Errant from Nakada met Watanabe's Negate. Watanabe tried to stay alive with an Oblivion Ring to exile Nakada's Baneslayer, but with the help of Lotus Cobra, Nakada cast an Eldrazi Conscription on his Lotus Cobra to attack for the win.

Nakada 1 – Watanabe 1

Watanabe chose to send his opening hand back twice and ended up with a 5-card hand to start his game again as Nakada chose to kept his opening 7. Nakada's first turn Hierarch led him to a second turn Knight of Reliquary while Watanabe played his own Noble Hierarch after Nakada's.

A late Master of the Wild Hunt was summoned to Watanabe's side of the battlefield but Nakada was ready for the threat, as he calmly put it away with an Oblivion Ring. Watanabe attempted to get his Master of the Wild Hunt back with an Oblivion Ring of his own, but Nakada's Negate made sure that it didn't. Nakada then summoned a Baneslayer Angel and along with his 8/8 Knight of Reliquary, the game seemed to be quickly slipping away from Watanabe's grip.

Watanabe chose to cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor, using the second ability to return the Knight back into Nakada's hand to stay alive but as Nakada's Baneslayer Angel killed Jace handily, and Nakada followed it up with double Knight of Reliquary which was enough to make Watanabe extend his hand to Nakada.

Nakada 2 – Watanabe 1
