Nicholas Wong is your PTQ Austin @ Manawerx (26 July 2009) Champion!

Nicholas Wong emerged as champion as Brendan Soo dropped from his Finals match to give way to his opponent to pave the way for Nicholas to return to the Pro Tour. On his way to become champion, Nicholas defeated Kee Zizheng in the Quarters and Kenny Tan in the Semis. Brendan meanwhile had the harder path as he had to dispatch 2 of the Malaysia's biggest names - Au Yong Wai Kin in the Quarters and Terry Soh in the Semis. Meanwhile Freddy Wong and Jason Yap made the rest of the top 8, defeated by Kenny Tan and Terry Soh, respectively.

Terry Soh vs Brendan Soo

Game 1

Terry's kept his opening 7 as Brendan took a mulligan to go down to 6 as Terry started the game but Brendan made the first play with a Putrid Leech. Terry countered the spell however with a Broken Ambition as Terry then drew 2 cards off Esper Charm.

Brendan followed up with a Great Sable Stag however as Terry struggled to deal with it as he went down to 14 over the turns. Kitchen Finks bolstered Brendan's side of the board but Terry's Plumeveil kept it at bay while a Chameleon Colossus got countered by a Cryptic Command. A Wall of Reverence provided Terry a means to stop Brendan's Stag from harassing his lifetotals but Terry decided to play it safe and not block the Stag anyway. Brendan is unwilling to let the 1/6 stick around however, and sent it to Terry's graveyard via a Maelstrom Pulse.

Brendan's Stag continues to harass Terry's lifetotals to 12 as Brendan kept the pressure high on Terry with a Wren's Run Vanquisher, - but Terry unleashed double Volcanic Fallout to totally clear the board of creatures. But Brendan kept pressure up anyway as he cast a Bloodbraid Elf who brought along a Boggart Ram-Gang. Cryptic Command however kept Terry safe, while a timely Cruel Ultimatum puts Terry in a much comfortable board position as he completely destroyed Brendan's hold on the game. Terry followed it up with a 2nd Cruel Ultimatum which prompted Brendan to scoop his cards up for the 2nd game.

Game 2

This time was Terry's turn to mulligan as the players did nothing the first few turns except playing lands until Brendan played a Great Sable Stag, followed up by a Bloodbraid Elf who flipped over a Nameless Inversion for Brendan, but it was quickly sent to the bottom of his library. Terry still took a beating on that turn as he took 6 to go 14 before another 6 sent him to 8 after he tried to look for an answer with an Esper Charm with a single land untapped.

Brendan took the chance to send a Lightning Bolt to Terry to put him at 5. A Baneslayer Angel threatened to spell the end of Brendan's offense, but a Maelstrom Pulse off the top of his deck sent Brendan's only obstacle away as he cruised onto victory.

Game 3

Brendan's Putrid Leech met a quick demise through Terry's Deathmark. A Kitchen Finks took Terry to 17 as Brendan played a Great Sable Stag. Terry, stuck on 3 lands, played a Plumeveil to block Brendan's Kitchen Finks as Brendan sent a Lightning Bolt to finish off the 4/4. But Brendan kept damage flowing as Terry kept missing his land-drops, unable to put up a defense.

Photobucket

Brendan then played another Great Sable Stag but Terry had a Runed Halo set on the Stag to keep himself alive. Brendan however had a Maelstrom Pulse ready to once again destroy Terry's last line of defense into the game and match win.

PTQ Austin @ Manawerx (26 July 2009) Event Coverage - Quarterfinals
Terry Soh vs Jason Yap

Game 1

Terry, going first, led off the game with a Vivid Creek while Jason had a Llanowar Elves, followed up by an Elvish Visionary and a Mosswort Bridge. The 2 elves chipped Terry's lifetotals to 18, as Jason dropped another Mosswort Bridge into play. Terry then cast an Esper Charm to draw himself 2 cards while an Lightning Bolt killed off Jason's Llanowar Elves.

Jason then tried to cast an Elvish Archdruid but it got countered by a Broken Ambition. Jason's Primal Command met the same fate in the following turn but got another Llanowar Elves into the battlefield.

Over the turns, Jason's elves slowly chipped Terry's lifetotals to 13. Another Esper Charm drew Terry 2 cards in the meantime before a Cruel Ultimatum gave Terry a firm grip on the game. That turn with Terry all tapped out to cast the Ultimatum gave Jason a chance to cast Primal Command to find a Regal Force, but a 2nd Cruel Ultimatum cleared those cards away as well along with killing off the last survivor of Jason's elves.

Photobucket

Playing off the top with an empty board, Jason cast Devoted Druid which didn't stay for long thanks to Terry's Lightning Bolt, followed with a Heritage Druid. Terry in the meantime, cast a Broodmate Dragon, while all Jason could do was to play the Heritage Druid he just drew. Terry made quick work of the druid as well with a Volcanic Fallout and it was enough to convince Jason to pack in his cards for game 2.

Jason Yap 0 – Terry Soh 1

Game 2

Jason decided to keep his hand in a heartbeat while Terry took a moment before he too decided to keep his opening 7. Jason started off with a Noble Hierarch that brought along a Burrenton Forge-Tender and a Llanowar Elves on the following as a Mosswort Bridge caused Jason to take a little time to consider his options, one of the few pauses in the round as both Terry and Jason were very brisk with most of their plays. Terry then cast Thoughtseize which managed to force Jason to discard a Great Sable Stag which might be problematic for him, from a hand of Llanowar Elves and Guttural Response.

Photobucket

Jason then took the opportunity to drop a Elvish Archdruid, attacking Terry into 15 over 2 turns while Terry evoked his Mulldrifter to keep the cards flowing into his hand but Jason has amassed quite a sizable army by now, and Terry soon found his lifetotals to be at 10. Terry had a Wall of Reverence that brought him back to 11 while providing a large speed bump for Jason butt he went down to 7 after before Terry's Wall put him back to 8.

Terry then tried to cast Cryptic Command to tap Jason's elves down, but a Guttural Response to keep up the beatdown, sending Terry to 4. Terry however then cast a Baneslayer Angel put an end to to Jason's offense and with the Wall of Reverence, Terry quickly turned Jason's efforts over the turns to waste as he went back to 9, before he went to 14 with Jason without the means to deal with the Mythic angel.

Photobucket

Terry went on the offense too with the Angel before a pair of dragons thanks to the Broodmate Dragon that Terry cast made quick work of Jason despite Jason's best efforts to put pressure on Terry along with a Great Sable Stag that Jason managed to get into play. But the Angel and Dragons and the lifegain was too much for Jason to handle as he fail to find the removal he badly needed. Jason's Forge-Tender tried to keep his controller alive through her sacrifice, but it wasn't enough as Terry had a Lightning Bolt to finish off Jason that very turn anyway.
