Terry Soh is your PTQ San Diego 18th October 2009 Champion!

Terry Soh
Terry Soh, PTQ San Diego @ Eternal Magic (18 August 2009) Champion!

Terry Soh drafted a mean Ally-based red black deck backed up with plenty of removals including double Disfigure and triple Torch Slinger that powered their way through the entire top 8 elimination rounds, all the way to the top. Terry had a little trouble against Mohd Khairul Anuar who is here on a back to back top 8, just fresh from a top 8 appearance in the Cardmaster 1K Standard tournament just the day before. His fast red white deck which featured a very lean and low curve but with plenty of burn to finish off games proved to be a challenge in the finals but Terry managed to pull through ahead after all in 3 very tight and closely fought games.

Terry on his way to the finals fought off strong contenders like PTQ veteran Yau Mun Yip and his green based 4-color special that could power out bombs like Iona, Shield of Emeria early thanks to a large abundance of green mana acceleration and a certain mythic snake - Lotus Cobra during the Semifinals but not before defeating 2009 Nationals top 16 competitor Chen Tze Kang and his heavy green deck filled with haymakers such as Baloth Woodcrasher and Territorial Baloth with some red burn and triple Bladetusk Boar to complement it in the Quarterfinals.

PTQ SD August 2009 Top 8 draft
The top 8 drafts with the PT:SD invite on the line

Meanwhile, Mohd Khairul Anuar stopped the advancement of Siew Han Liang and his white red landfall, with triple Steppe Lynx and a Plated Geopede who failed to get past Mohd Khairul in the Semifinals, and before that, he also fought off Arif Kamaruddin's challenge for a spot in the PTQ finals in the Quarterfinals as Arif's blue black concoction with double Whiplash Trap, Lorthos, the Tidemaker and a sizable amount of creatures with evasion

On the other side of the brackets, Ken Lim drafted a blue black deck that featured a Roil Elemental which wasn't enough to push him past the Quarterfinals against Siew Han Liang in the Quarterfinals while Ong Joe Lin and his blue green with a white splash for double Shepherd of the Lost fell to Yau Mun Yip in his bid for this PTQ.

PTQ San Diego @ Eternal Magic (18 October 2009) Event Coverage - Finals
Mohd Khairul Anuar vs Terry Soh

Mohd Khairul Anuar
Mohd Khairul Anuar

Game 1

Khairul quickly sent his opening 7 back for a new 6 card hand while Terry kept his, as Khairul starts off with a Akoum Refuge, going to 21 before casting a Zektar Shrine Expedition, followed with a Cliff Threader and a Highland Berserker while Terry had a Nimana Sell-Sword. The Berserker is forced to stay back in the face of the 3/3 ally of Terry's but he could only watch as the Cliff Threader chipped into his lifetotals not having or not willing to spend a removal spell on the 2/1 Mountain-walker. A second Nimana Sell-Sword made his first a 4/4 which chipped in for 4 as Khairul continued to harass Terry's lifetotals with the Cliff Threader while he cast a Makindi Shieldmate to try to hold the fort.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

Terry's 3/3 and 4/4 Sell-Swords went into the red zone trying to topple Khairul's defences but a Pitfall Trap killed the 4/4 while the ¼ Shieldmate blocked the 3/3 but was killed anyway thanks to a Disfigure from Terry. A Torch Slinger killed off the threatening mountain-walker as Khairul's Highland Berserker traded with Terry's Torch Slinger. The furious continuous trade of blows continues with Khairul's Shatterskull Giant was quickly sent to the graveyard by a kicked Gatekeeper, but Terry had a slight upper hand now with the the help from the vampire, along with a Vampire Lacerator. In the meantime, Khairul finally hit the 3rd land needed for his Zektar Shrine Expedition whose 7/1 trample haste elemental took 7 from Terry to settle at 6 as Khairul continues build his board with a Kor Sanctifier. Little that Terry know that the game was already over for him however as after he lost a life to his Lacerator, Khairul flashed an Unstable Footing, capable to deal the final 5 damage to Terry, just as Terry seemed to have taken control of the game, summoning a bunch of monsters on his side who could do nothing in time.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

Mohd Khairul Anuar 1 – Terry Soh 0

Game 2

Terry sideboard-ed in 3 cards as Khairul made no changes, and with Terry choosing to start first, he quickly sent back his opening 7 while Khairul is content with his. Keeping his 6, Terry only played lands for his first 3 turns while Khairul made the first moves with an Adventuring Gear and a Highland Berserker, which got a pump from the gear and a Teetering Peaks but the Berserker met a quick demise in the form off a Disfigure from Terry. Goblin Guide then came in on the following turn, taking on the gear and got a landfall pump taking 8 over 2 turns from Terry despite Terry putting up a Geyser Glider for defense as Khairul took it out of the battlefield with a Magma Rift.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

When Khairul finally missed his landfall trigger for the Adventuring Gear, the Goblin guide tried to hit for another 2 but finally met his end from Terry's Disfigure but Khairul reinforced his side of the battlefield after with a Shatterskull Giant while a Tuktuk Grunts, Surrakar Marauder is cast along with an Expedition Map by Terry to set up his defense. Landfall hits for the Adventuring Gear packed Giant as he tried to hit in for 6 thanks to Goblin Shortcutter putting off the Grunts form blocking for Terry, forcing him to chump block with his Surrakar.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

All the while where Terry is being pushed onto being defensive, Khairul had yet to find his white mana source and a handful of white cards is beginning clump up Khairul and slow hi down. Taking advantage of the lull, a Crypt Ripper followed by a Nimana Sell-Sword plus a lack of landfall forced Khairul to hold back his forces as Terry turned the tables, attacking Khairul who was at 21 thanks to a Refuge land to 17 with his 4/4 grunts. Another Goblin Shortcutter forced Terry's Sell-Sword to stand aside made Terry trade his pumped Crypt Ripper to kill off Khairul's 4/3 giant.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

The Adventuring Gear was then picked up by one of the Shortcutter as Terry went in for another 4 a turn with the Grunts for a couple of turns, as Khairul could put up anything but burn Terry down another 5 with Unstable Footing to put him a precariously low lifetotals. Terry pushed on anyway, despite having his 4/4 Grunts killed off by a Magma Rift, and in his final moments of game 2, Khairul summoned another Shatterskull Giant but Terry's Magma Rift cleared the path to victory for him as he sealed the game with his 3/3 Sell-Sword dealing the final few points of lethal damage to Khairul.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

Mohd Khairul Anuar 1 – Terry Soh 1

Game 3

Khairul chose to start first as he kept his opening 7 but once again Terry sent his opening hand back. Khairul went up to 21 with his Refuge as a 2nd turn Shortcutter set the pace for the game. The Goblin chipped Terry to 18 as a Zektar Shrine Expedition threatened to quickly end games for Khairul. The 2/1 goblin is killed by Terry's Seismic Shudder but Khairul quickly followed up with a Highland Berserker post combat. The Berserker equipped Khairul's Adventuring Gear got a pump thanks to landfall, and with the help of a Goblin Shortcutter, the Berserker hit Terry to 14 despite the Nimana Sell-Sword Terry have. The Sell-Sword quickly became a 4/4 however thanks to a Tuktuk Grunts but perhaps fearing Khairul's Zektar Shrine Expedition, he left them on defence. His defense plans was dashed amongst the rocks however as a Windborne Charge lifted Khairul's 2 creatures to the air to hit for 8, leaving Terry at a very dangerous 6.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

Terry thought long and hard before a Torch Slinger kicked sent Khairul's Berserker into the graveyard and kept his team behind anyway. With an Unstable Footingin his hand and the Expedition needing another landfall counter, Khairul is really counting on hitting a land to seal the game and match win. He does hit his land draw, played the land, and quickly sent his 7/1 Trample Haste elemental and his Goblin Shortcutter into the red zone, choosing not to equip either creatures with his Adventuring Gear, possibly holding mana up to seal off the game with his spell should Terry make a mistake but Terry ever cautious sent all of this guys to block the 7/1, with his Slinger blocking Khairul's Goblin Shortcutter, in what might prove to be a fatal mistake for Khairul. The creatures all traded blows and when the dust settles, the battlefield is empty and Terry survived the skirmish at 6.

F – Terry Soh vs Mohd Khairul Anuar

Changing gears, Terry went onto the offensive with a Tuktuk Grunts but died to Khairul's Pitfall Trap. And when Khairul sent in his Goblin Guide, he took got killed by a Disfigure. Khairul's Goblin Shortcutter was quickly dealt with by Terry's Torch Slinger but a Kor Skyfisher returned Khairul a Kabira Crossroads to gain another 2 life the flying 2/3 Kor met an Hideous End from Terry while his Torch Slinger went in for 2. Khairul's Kor Hookmaster kept it tapped and tried to end the game there and then but he got killed too by a Disfigure, in response to the landfall trigger of the adventuring gear that Khairul equipped him to.

In the meantime, Terry finally got some damage in over a few turns, as he turned the damage up a notch with a Surrakar Marauder joining his Torch Slinger. An attempt to stem the bleeding with a Shatterskull Giant was met with a Gatekeeper of Malakir, pushing Khairul to 5 in this high tension and breathtaking game. Knowing that he is almost at his wits end, Khairul burns Terry to 1 with his Unstable Footing but in the end he was overrun by Terry's monsters, failing to find a way to deal that that ever so critical final damage to kill off Terry's game.

PTQ San Diego @ Eternal Magic (18 October 2009) Event Coverage - Semifinals
Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

Yau Mun Yip
Yau Mun Yip

Game 1

Mun Yip won the dice roll and elected to go first, deciding to keep his opening seven but Terry was quick to send his back for a fresh 6 that got a quick nod. A Graypelt Refuge put Mun Yip to 21 before a Nissa's Chosen entered play on his 3rd turn. But Terry had nothing for 4 turns straight despite Mun Yip's Nissa's Chosen, later joined by a Timbermaw Larva attacked Terry to 12 after a couple of turns. Terry on his 5th turn killed the Larva with a kicked Torch Slinger. A River Boar joined Mun Yip's side of the board and with the elf, Terry went down to 8. A Lotus Cobra for Mun Yip allowed Mun Yip to cast a Bala Ged Thief off the Cobra, taking a Mountain from Terry. This however gave Terry a chance to kill off the River Boa with another kicked Torch Slinger. Although outnumbered, attacking no longer seemed to be beneficial for Mun Yip. Terry seemingly appeared to be flooded with lands, as he showed his opponent a Mountain and Swamp as Mun Yip cast a Joraga Bard to activate his Thief's ally trigger ability. Nonetheless, Mun Yip quickly overran Terry Soh as his army took his opponent down with the help of a Burst Lighting which he was able to cast thanks to a certain mythic snake.

SF – Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

Yau Mun Yip 1 – Terry Soh 0

Game 2

Terry chose to draw as Mun Yip joked how Terry is looking down on his decks that is lacking in threats. Mun Yip quickly sent his opening hand back for a fresh 6 which drew a cringe off Mun Yip, and back to the library that hand too went for a 5 card hand which he quickly kept.

Graypelt Refuge put Mun Yip to 21 as both players played lands and passed turns for a couple of turns before a Harrow from Mun Yip found him a Swamp and Mountain to cast a Bala Ged Thief, to force Terry to discard a Magma Rift.

SF – Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

Terry then cast a Crypt Ripper and considered attacking but held him back after all. A Punishing Fire sent the Crypt Ripper off to the graveyard as the Thief chipped Terry to 18. Mind Sludge stripped Mun Yip of his entire hand as the Thief chipped in for another 2 before Terry's Torch Slinger killed him off as 2 Tuktuk Grunts over 2 consecutive turns quickly sent Mun Yip to 6 after a couple of turns as Mun Yip drew little action beyond a Khalni Heart Expedition. Inferno Trap and Burst Lightning helped to delay the impending doom Mun Yip is facing down but it wasn't enough to keep away from the jaws of defeat as the players shuffled up for the decider.

SF – Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

Yau Mun Yip 1 – Terry Soh 1

Game 3

Mun Yip chose to start first and with both players keeping their opening hands, Mun Yip started with yet another land with life gain, as a Kabira Crossroads put him up to 22. Both players played artifacts in the form of a Trusty Machete for Mun Yip while Terry played a Expedition Map which was used soon after Mun Yip cast his Oran-Rief Recluse. A kicked Gatekeeper of Malakir made quick work of the 1/3 spider while Mun Yip set up his defences in the form of a Joraga Bard, forcing Terry to pass his turn without any action. A World Queller threatened to disrupt the balance of the game in favor of Mun Yip but not before Terry stripped Mun Yip of his hand yet again with a Mind Sludge.

SF – Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

The World Queller took lands away from both players but Terry went down hard to 13 as the Bard picked up the Machete to become a 3/5 along with the 4/4 Queller. A Lotus Cobra joined the Mun Yip's side of the battlefield for Mun Yip but a Magma Rift killed off the World Queller. The Bard with the machete continued to harass Terry's lifetotals however, knocking Terry to 10 before Lotus Cobra picked up the Machete form the Bard to become a 4/2. Terry summoned a Tuktuk Grunts but had to leave it behind on defense as once again as the Machete-wielding Bard tried to hit in for another 3. After much time spent in consideration, Terry put his 2 creatures in front of the Bard in the hopes of killing it off but as he feared, a Punishing Fire sent Terry's hopes of dealing with the 3/5 crumbling to ashes as he lost both of his creatures. Terry finally found answers for Mun Yip's threats as his kicked Torch Slinger killed off the Cobra as a kicked Heartstabber Mosquito killed off the Bard. Mun Yip tried to rebuild his board position with a Zendikar Farguide.

SF – Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

With his life being precariously low, Terry thought long and hard on how to carry his game forward from this point on and finally decided to go aggressive as he sent in his 2/2 flying mosquito before summoning a Crypt Ripper to hold the fort along with his Torch Slinger. The Farguide took on the Machete and swung into the red zone where he was met with both of Terry's creatures, with Terry pumping the Ripper to a 5/5. The Ripper and the Farguide both traded blows and were sent to the graveyard.

SF – Terry Soh vs Yau Mun Yip

With the game now firmly in his control, Terry killed off a Tajuru Archer of Mun Yip's with a Marsh Casualties and with a Nimana Sell-Sword, the game was quickly over for Mun Yip as Terry's creatures quickly sealed off the game and knocked Mun Yip out of contention for the finals.

PTQ San Diego @ Eternal Magic (18 October 2009) - Quarterfinals
Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang
Quarterfinals – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

Game 1

Tze Kang hit a 1 on his dice roll, lamenting his ominous bad start to the match as the players sleeved up their decks together and shuffled them. Both players considered their opening hands briefly before Terry got the game started with a Surrakar Marauder on his 2nd turn while all Tze Kang had a Oran-Rief Recluse to join his side of the battlefield. Terry missed a land drop on his following and could only leave his Marauder back as Tze Kang's 1/3 spider looms on the other side of the battlefield. A Bladetusk Boar for Tze Kang began to spell trouble for Terry as he has yet to draw his lands while Tze Kang's army quickly sent Terry down to 16, giving 2 counters to Tze Kang's newly cast Beastmaster Ascension.

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

Terry counterattacked with his Surrakar Marauder for a couple of turns to take Tze Kang to 16 but was forced to discard a couple of cards as the elusive lands remained out of reach. Tze Kang attacked Terry to 12 before summoning a Vastwood Gorger and with the Beastmaster Ascension crept closer to being active, Terry took a quick look of his the top card of his library before scooping up his side of the board to move into the 2nd game.

Terry Soh 0 – Chen Tze Kang 1

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

Game 2

Terry took some time to consider before deciding to go first after all. Tze Kang led off with a River Boa this time on his second turn but the Snake didn't stay for long as Terry killed it off with a Disfigure. A Nimana Sell-Sword for Terry also quickly met a quick demise as Tze Kang killed it with a Burst Lighting with the +1/+1 counter trigger on the stack. An Oran-Rief Survivalist joined Tze Kang's side of the battlefield and the 2/2 ally hit in for 2 while Terry spent his turn playing a Khalni Gem, before killing off the ally with a kicked Torch Slinger. It was Tze Kang's turn to be stuck on lands however as he had to discard a Summoning Trap on his following turn while Terry had a Geyser Glider. Tze Kang found his 2nd forest however and cast a Nissa's Chosen, but a kicked Gatekeeper of Malakir quickly put the elf out of the way which prompted Tze Kang to scoop up his cards as well the face of impending doom.

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

Terry Soh 1 – Chen Tze Kang 1

Game 3

Tze Kang chose to start first and but Terry was the fisrt to make a move with a Vampire Lacerator, going down to 19 on his following upkeep but the vampire attacked Tze Kang to 18. Tze Kang passed his 3rd turn doing nothing but play lands yet again as Terry went to 18 but another attack from the vampire took Tze Kang to 16. Terry, eager to put up more pressure on Tze Kang, cast an unkicked Torch Slinger.

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

Another of Tze Kang's turn passed uneventfully but the vampire died to Tze Kang's Burst Lightning but went down to 14 while Terry stands at 17. Terry continued to build his army with a Nimana Sell-Sword. Tze Kang had a kicked Torch Slinger who killed off Terry's own goblin but Terry had a Tuktuk Grunts to create a huge wave of damage onto Tze Kang, as the 3/3 haste goblin ally also pumped Terry's Sell-Sword to knock Tze Kang's lifetotals half to 7. A 2nd Nimana Sell-Sword forced Tze Kang to go deep into the thinking tank as he thought hard about his options with the Ally triggers on the stack.

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

In the end, Tze Kang chose to do nothing and allowed the allies' +1/+1 counters to stack up. Tze Kang then cast a Summoning Trap as Terry's creatures were committed into combat, but cringed as his top 7 cards were filled with lands and only 2 creatures both of which were not the ones Tze Kang would prefer to see.

QF – Terry Soh vs Chen Tze Kang

In the end, he chose to put the Timbermaw Larva and double blocked the 4/4 grunts with his Larva Torch Slinger and but Terry had a Disfigure, killing off both creatures. Tze Kang, shaking his head, drew his card for his following turn and concede the game and match.
