GPT Singapore @ CCEGAMES January 18 2009 - Finals
Zac Hill vs Mohamad Nazim

Game 1

Photobucket

Both players happy with their opening hands, started off the game with a Mogg Fanatic from Nazim followed up quickly with a Pyrostatic Pillar after his Fanatic took Zac down to 19. Zac sacrificed his fetch land to take himself down to 18 and was then troubled by the Pillar. He went down to 17 from another attack from the Fanatic after which a Lava Spike from Nazim took himself to 18 but put Zac at 14, followed up with a suspended Rift Bolt.

All Zac played was a Riptide Laboratory on his following turn. At the beginning of Nazim's following turn, he went down to 16 as the Rift Bolt resolved, taking 2 points of damage from his own Pillar, but the spell also took Zac to 11. Nazim quickly followed up with another attack from Mogg Fanatic to take Zac to 10. A Magma Jet from Nazim also went unopposed which then took Zac to 8 and Nazim to 14. The Fanatic chipped another point off Zac to 7 before Nazim played a Blinkmoth Nexus.

Photobucket

Zac mulled over his options at the end of Nazim's turn but decided to do nothing after all. Nazim however had an Incinerate which took Nazim to 12 from the Pillar but Zac chose to counter it with a Mana Leak which took him to 5 with the 2 damage from the Pillar. A Shard Volley took Zac to 2 and it was just enough for Nazim to send his creatures into the red zone for the win with his Fanatic and animated Nexus.

Zac Hill 0 - Mohamad Nazim 1

Game 2

Zac started off with a Chrome Mox imprinting a Glen Elendra Archmage and a Polluted Delta which fetched a Breeding Pool for Zac in response to Nazim's playing of a Mogg Fanatic. Zac then followed up with another Polluted Delta on his following turn. Nazim played his Blinkmoth Nexus before attacking with his Fanatic which chipped a point off Zac to put him at 18. Zac cracked his Delta again taking himself to 17 fetching a Steam Vents before playing a Riptide Laboratory and a Glen-Elendra Archmage before passing his turn.

Nazim then attacked again with his Fanatic, which was blocked by Zac’s Archmage. With damage on the stack, Nazim sacrificed his Fanatic to deal another 1 point of damage to the Archmage to kill it off. The Archmage returned to play thanks to persist before another Fanatic and Keldon Marauders entered play for Nazim.

Photobucket

Zac then played a Ghost Quarters and passed his turn. Nazim mulled over his choices before attacking with both his creatures. His Marauders got blocked by Zac's Archmage while the Fanatic went through for another point of damage. Nazim tried to play a Pyrostatic Pillar but Zac was ready with a counter spell, as well as another counter spell to counter Nazim’s Magma Jet.

A cycled Lonely Sandbar drew Zac a Mutavault and when Nazim tried to play a Shrapnel Blast, Zac went down to 10 and it was quickly followed by a Shard Volley and Incinerate which took Zac down to 4 but emptied Nazim's hand.

Zac then went on the offense, hitting Nazim with his animated Mutavault to chip him down to 16, but Nazim has nothing for a couple of turns. Then when Zac tried to play a Thirst for Knowledge at the end of Nazim's turn, Nazim took the opportunity to try to push in a Magma Jet in response to Zac's spell but Zac had a Spellstutter Sprite to counter it but not before cracking another fetch land to take himself to 3. Zac then found an Umezawa's Jitte and quickly cast the artifact spell and equipped onto his 1/1 Sprite, ready to turn the game around after a strong start from Nazim. Nazim then decided to just concede to move on to the rubber game.

Photobucket

Zac Hill 1 - Mohamad Nazim 1

Game 3

Nazim started off the game with a suspended Rift Bolt after he took a mulligan to 6. The spell took Zac to 17 while Nazim followed up with another suspended Rift Bolt and a Blinkmoth Nexus. Zac cracked his Polluted Delta to take himself to 16 before playing a Steam Vents tapped. Nazim's Rift Bolt took Zac to 13 before his animated Nexus took Zac to 12 and a Seal of Fire finished off Nazim's turn. Zac then played a Mutavault and when Nazim tried to hit Zac with his Nexus again, Zac tried to put out a Spellstutter Sprite to block, but it got killed before the declaring blockers step, taking Zac to 11.

When Nazim tried to take another point off Zac again with his Nexus, Zac had another Sprite, but this time Nazim was forced or chose to trade his Nexus with Zac's Sprite. Zac then played another Mutavault and a Glen Elendra Archmage, which got responded by an Incinerate to Zac from Nazim. Zac cracked his fetch land for an island before going down to 7 from the Incinerate. A Mogg Fanatic entered play for Nazim. Zac then sent his Archmage into combat on his next two turns to take Nazim to 16 with the 2/2 flyer.

Photobucket

A Pyrostatic Pillar from Nazim met an Annul while the Archmage took another 2 off Nazim to take him to 14. A Lava Spike was countered by a Spellstutter Sprite but not before Nazim responded with a Shard Volley on Zac. Zac thought about it for a while before deciding to Mana Leak it. Zac then on his following turn played an Academy Ruins before sending in his 2/2 and 1/1 flyers to take Nazim down to 11 before adding another Archmage to the board for himself.

Nazim appeared to have drawn blanks as he did nothing while Zac hit hard with his flying army, along with 2 animated Mutavaults to take Nazim to 2 before finishing him off with another quick combat step.

Divine vs. Demonic Packaging

We're only a couple of months away from the release of Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic!

As you no doubt remember from our announcement last December, it's coming out on April 10. We didn't show you the box back then. That was so we could show it to you now!

Packaging Designed by Emi Tanji, Art Directed by Karin Powell

That is a lovely display box! We mention that because the people who design the display boxes do a lot of work and hardly ever get mentioned. Let's take one of those boxes out and get a good look at it!

Very nice! It's both divine ... and demonic.

Oh! And stop by again on Friday for a special Divine vs. Demonic surprise!

GPT Singapore @ CCEGAMES January 18 2009 - Semifinals
Zac Hill vs Matthew Wong

Game 1

Photobucket

Matthew won the dice roll but immediately chose to mulligan – after taking some time to consider his 6 card hand, he decided to mulligan it as well to a 5 card hand.

Matthew started off the game with a Bitterblossom on his 2nd turn but Zac had a Spell Snare for it and as Matthew passed his turn; Zac cracked his Flooded Strand which is responded with Matthew cracking his own Flooded Strand, quickly followed by a Vendilion Clique which took away Zac's Vedalken Shackles.

Zac then followed up with just another fetch land before Matthew beat Zac to 16 with his Clique while his Polluted Delta took him to 15 while Matthew sat tight on 17.

Photobucket

A Mutavault entered play for Zac before Matthew sent his Clique into the red zone to take Zac down to 12 and passed his turn without any plays. Zac then played Thirst for Knowledge at the end of Matthew's turn which Matthew took some time to consider before allowing it to resolve.

Zac then played an Engineered Explosives for 3 which was allowed to resolve before another swing with the Clique took Zac to 9. Zac then played Life from the Loam, which allowed Zac to bring back his 2 fetch lands which allowed Zac to play one of them right away. When Matthew tried to attack with his 3/1 Clique again, Zac had enough of it and sacrificed and used his Explosives' ability, which caused Matthew to take some time to ponder before returning the faerie wizard to his hand with his Riptide Laboratory. Zac searched for another land with his fetch land before playing another, and then he followed it up by playing a Glen Elendra Archmage which resolved unopposed.

Photobucket

Matthew has nothing for his turn again while Zac played another Mutavault and the end of the turn, Matthew tried to replay his Vendilion Clique which is responded with a Spellstutter Sprite, which in turn met a Spell Snare, but Zac then sacrificed and used his Archmage's ability to make sure that the Clique gets countered by his Sprite.

Zac then went on the offense, sending his now 1/1 Archmage, and Mutavault into the red zone. Before blockers Matthew tried to play a Spellstutter Sprite of his own, but it got countered by Zac's Sprite of his own, but a Smother on Zac's animated Mutavault resulted in Zac taking down Matthew to just 13.

Photobucket

An Umezawa's Jitte is destroyed with an Ancient Grudge from Zac before Zac's army of 1/1s took 3 off Matthew to 10. Matthew then suspended an Ancestral Vision on his own turn before Zac played Gifts Ungiven which is used to find a Vedalken Shackles, Academy Ruins, Umezawa's Jitte and a Riptide Laboratory. Matthew took quite some time to consider before deciding to give Zac the lands.

Zac then sacrificed another fetch land, taking himself to 6 before playing his newly obtained Academy ruins and sending his 3 1/1s faeries to take Matthew to 7. Another Archmage entered play for Zac and with open mana from Zac, Matthew appeared to be further locked down. Matthew then played an Bitterblossom which Zac did nothing to before Zac's army of faeries took Matthew to 2.

Photobucket

Matthew then tried to play Mistbind Clique, Zac was ready with a Mana Leak. Matthew then dropped to 1 from his Bitterblossom, netting him a 1/1 Faerie, and when a last attempt to regain control of the game from Matthew as he played another Mistbind Clique got countered by Zac's Spellstutter Sprite, Matthew scooped up his cards to move on to game 2.

Zac Hill 1 - Matthew Wong 0

Game 2

Matthew started off the game with a untapped Watery Grave, paying the 2 life in order to Thoughtseize, to go down to 16 from the spell, forcing Zac to discard his Gifts Ungiven before an Extirpate from Matthew on his following turn took all of Zac's Gifts Ungiven away from the game.

Photobucket

Meanwhile Zac played back to back fetch lands while Matthew also spent his turns building up his mana until at one of Matthew's end of turn, Zac tried to push for a Thirst for Knowledge which got countered by a Mana Leak from Matthew. Zac then played his Glen Elendra Archmage on his following turn while Matthew has no counter magic mana available but Matthew also sneaked in a Bitterblossom while Zac was also tapped out.

Photobucket

Zac then transmuted his Tolaria West for an Engineered Explosives which is played immediately but it met a Spellstutter Sprite which countered it. Matthew went down to 12 from the Bitterblossom and got a 1/1 faerie token off it and when he tried to play his Umezawa's Jitte, Zac initially revealed an Annul from his hand in response to the spell, but hesitated, thought for a while, before casting the spell after all. Matthew's Sprite chipped Zac off for 1 to 17, before Zac played his Ghost Quarters. Zac then decided to go on the offense, animating two of his Mutavaults and attacked for 6 along with his Archmage, all of them went unblocked, taking Matthew down to 6 before his own Bitterblossom took him down to 5.

A Glen Elendra Archmage of his own fills up the board on Matthew's side while Zac went down to 16 from another Sprite's attack. Zac maintained pressure on Matthew with his own Archmage and a single animated Mutavault, which caused Matthew to stop and think before putting his Archmage in front of Zac's and both of his faerie tokens in front off Zac's Mutavault, sending all of the creatures in combat to go to the graveyard although the two Archmages returned back to play thanks to their persist ability. Zac then cracked his fetch land to put himself at 15 before playing another Glen Elendra Archmage.

Photobucket

Matthew went down to 4, chipped Zac for 2 with his Mutavault to take him to 13 before passing his turn. Zac sacrificed his Ghost Quarters to take out Matthew's Riptide Laboratory, which Matthew used to return his Archmage into his hand before it got destroyed and then Zac pushed in his creatures with his 2 Archamges and his Mutavault. Matthew could at beast only block in a way to put himself at just 2 life left, which at his upkeep became his last life point, and tried to play an Umezawa's Jitte to try to put himself back into the game but Zac was ready with a Spellstutter Sprite and Matthew's Spell Snare was for naught as Zac has the mana to activate his Archmage's ability which ultimately sealed up the game for Matthew, giving Zac the game and match win.

Zac Hill wins the Semifinals beating Matthew Wong 2-0

On the other bracket, Nazim who defeated Loco in the quarters defeated Kee ZiZheng who in turn defeated Ng Wei San in 3 quick red on red games.

Zac Hill meanwhile met Rajesh Ganesan during the quarters while Matthew Wong met Johan Jamal Yacob earlier.

Core Set Changes Begin Summer 2009

Beginning with the Magic: The Gathering core set which will be released on July 17, 2009, Wizards of the Coast will be making a number of changes to core sets. In preparation for the core set launch, we wanted to outline for you the changes that you'll see when the next core set is released.

Photobucket

Instead of the expected 11th Edition on July 2009, the latest core set will be Magic: The Gathering 2010 Core Set, or Magic 2010 for short to reflect the upcoming year.

In addition, instead of a biannual schedule, the core sets are now annual sets and for the first time, not entirely reprints, and there will be pre-release and launch parties and even in high-level organized play in the limited format.

Keep reading for more detailed information and preview cards!

Set Name

Beginning with the upcoming core set, we will no longer be using "Nth Edition" to identify core sets. Instead, we will use a year designator. The July 17, 2009 release will be the Magic: The Gathering 2010 core set—Magic 2010 for short—to reflect the upcoming year.

Set Frequency

Beginning with the Magic 2010 core set, all Magic core sets will be releasing annually in July instead of biannually. The core set currently scheduled for release in July 2010 will follow the same pattern and will be the Magic 2011 core set.

Set Content

Unlike previous core sets, which were all reprints, the Magic 2010 core set will have approximately 50 percent brand-new cards. Following in the footsteps of Tenth Edition, all core sets going forward will be black-bordered. Also of note is that planeswalkers will appear in the core set for the first time starting with Magic 2010. The set size and rarity mix will still follow our new guidelines as announced last year. Magic 2010 contains 249 cards, including 15 mythic rare cards.

Organized Play

Since the core set now contains new cards, there will be Prerelease events and Launch Parties just like any other expansion set. Going forward, core sets will also be an integral part of high-level organized play. The Magic 2010 core set will be used in Limited-format Grand Prix events this year.

The Magic 2010 core set will become legal in the Standard format immediately on release. At that time, Tenth Edition will rotate out of Standard. Beginning with the Magic 2010 core set, each core set will be legal in Standard until October of the following year (each Magic core set will be legal in the Standard format for approximately 15 months), meaning that Standard rotates only once each year.

- Official announcement on Daily MTG, MagicTheGathering.com

GPT Singapore @ CCEGAMES January 18 2009 - Quarterfinals
Mohamad Nazim vs Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan (Loco)

Game 1

Photobucket
Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan (Loco)

Photobucket
Mohamad Nazim

Nazim won the dice roll and started off the game with a Mogg Fanatic while Loco had a Treetop Village. A Keldon Marauders joined Nazim's Fanatic, taking a point off Loco quickly followed by another point from the Fanatic. The Marauders were ready to make Loco take a full 5 from it but he had a Sakura Tribe Elder, ready to chump block Nazim's Marauders and get a land out of it as well. Nazim however had a Seal of Fire to take his opponent's potential blocker away and attacked with his 2 creatures before playing another Keldon Marauders, taking his opponent down to just 12 life left.

A Damnation cleared the board but Loco went down to 9 from the deaths of the two Marauders and Mogg Fanatic's ability. Nazim however then ply his burn spells to knock off Loco's life totals with a Rift Bolt and a Shrapnel Blast that took his opponent's life totals down to his very last point.

Loco tried to get back into the game with a Ravenous Baloth while Nazim was left with an empty hand. Loco sent his Baloth and his Treetop Village into the red zone, taking 7 points off Nazim to 13 before sacrificing his Baloth to get himself up to 5 and cycled a tranquil thicket before passing his turn.

Nazim took Loco down to 4 with his animated Blinkmoth Nexus before playing a Mogg Fanatic. Loco played a Crime // Punishment for one which caused Nazim to sacrifice his Fanatic to deal a damage to Loco before a freshly drawn Lava Spike is more than enough to finish off his opponent for the first game.

Mohamad Nazim 1 - Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan (Loco) 0

Game 2

Loco going first, mulled over this opening hand before deciding to mulligan his opening hand before keeping his six. Nazim started off the game with a Seal of Fire, followed with a Incinerate and a Lava Spike, while all Loco had was lands.

Kitchen Finks then came into play for Loco which gave him some relief, going up to 16 from 14 while Nazim played his first creature of the game, a Mogg Fanatic. The Finks attacked Nazim to 17 before Loco played a Krosan Grip, destroying Nazim's Seal of Fire before he had the chance to use it, thanks to the split second ability on Krosan Grip.

Both players' creatures went into the red zone on their respective controller's turn, after which at the end of Loco's turn, Nazim fired a Magma Jet on his opponent.. When his Mogg Fanatic tried to chip another point off Loco, it ran into a Putrefy, which Nazim immediately sacrificed the Fanatic for the goblin's ability. Loco stepped up the offense with an Indrik Stomphauler which destoryed Nazim's freshly played Ensnaring Bridge. Nazim again has nothing on his turn while Loco puts his creatures to good use with a 7-point combat phase with his Stomphauler and Finks to take Nazim to 4. Eternal Witness returns Putrefy back into Loco's hands but an end of his turn Flames of the Blood Hand took Loco to 8.

Photobucket

Nazim drew for his turn, thought about it, but passed his turn doing nothing after which Loco immediately sent all of his creatures to try to finish Nazim off for game 2, and after thinking about it for another while, Nazim scooped up his cards so that both players can move into the game 3.

Mohamad Nazim 1 - Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan (Loco) 1

Game 3

Nazim is happy with his opening 7 but a no-lander caused Loco to promptly send his hand back for a fresh 6.

Nazim starts off the game with a Mogg Fanatic and a Pyrostatic Pillar which proceeded to takes huge chunks of life off Loco as he played his Sakura-Tribe Elder while Nazim ply his burn, starting with a suspended Rift Bolt, followed quickly by a Magma Jet after Loco played his Kitchen Finks.

Photobucket

Both players keeps taking damage from the Pillar, but Loco's life totals are plummeting dangerously. Nazim sends his animated Blinkmoth Nexus to take Loco to 9, after which Loco sends his Finks to take Nazim to 13. A Sakura-Tribe Elder forced Loco to take another 2 damage from the Pillar to 7 and Nazim had an Incinerate to send him further down to 4, although it also took Nazim to 11.

Mogg Fanatic and an animated Blinkmoth Nexus charged into the red zone, taking Loco to just his last life point as he blocked the Mogg Fanatic with his Elder while Nazim pumped his animated Nexus with his other Nexus.

Photobucket

Loco, desperate for an answer to take him out of his current predicament failed to draw anything relevant on his following draw step, conceded the game and match with no way out.

Smalltalk: Awfully late, but being swamped with organizing and running the Conflux Pre-release and the Release Party and the holidays and the festivities and my own preparation for the GPTs themselves AND personal life and, and, and...

I better stop with the excuses.

Nevertheless, I have received several requests for the coverage, even though it was pre-Conflux, and over the next few days I will hopefully cover the whole event, followed up the recently concluded GPT that happened also in CCEGAMES on the 15th.

Thanks for sticking around.

Smalltalk: Sorry about the lack of updates over the last week or so, Chinese New Year, moving houses, and organizing and running your own pre-release for Conflux and lack of internet connection during the CNY holidays tends to cause things like that.

Hope everyone enjoyed playing with Conflux as much as I did!

The official Launch Parties for Conflux are this weekend!

Launch Parties provide a venue for you to buy the new release of Magic cards as soon as they’re available and play right away with other players in your local area. Run in local game and hobby stores around the world the weekend the new set is available in stores, Launch Parties are low-key introductions to the cards and a great way to meet new players.

Formats are varied at Launch Parties, including Sealed Deck and Booster Draft. In Sealed Deck, you build your deck out of a set number of cards given to you at the start of the event. A Booster Draft involves selecting cards from a larger pool of players, usually eight, and then building your deck out of the cards you draft.

If you enjoyed playing at a Launch Party, you should look into playing at the next Prerelease Event, along with Friday Night Magic.
