Vincent Gan hacked and oozed his way to his RM1,500 prize money with his blistering fast Jund Aggro despite showing up late and getting a game loss on his very first round. The tournament, with it's unique tournament structure, sees 20 qualified players to fight for a piece of the RM 5,000 up for grabs.

Despite the early setback, Vincent fought his way past the 5 rounds of swiss and in the finals defeated Mohd Ikmal Mohd Nasir with a string of 3 Bloodbraid Elf in 3 turns in an exciting 2nd game in the finals clinching victory in an attack that dealt exactly lethal damage while facing certain death on his opponent's following turn from a Battlegrace Angel.

On the way to the finals he handily dealt with Jason Lee and his 4-Color Control deck heavy on removal in the Semifinals before defeating Wong Qin Jin's Naya Aggro in two quick games in the Semifinals. Meanwhile, Mohd Ikmal Mohd Nasir with his version of the Naya deck fought off Choo Yoon Han's own version of the Naya deck in the Semifinals before defeating Nicholas Wong's Jund Aggro deck in the Quarterfinals.

Meanwhile Chew Fon Leong and his Jund Aggro and Zac Hill and his Naya Mid-range with Lavalanche rounded up the rest top 8.

The Cardmaster Games Centre RM5K Tournament - Finals
Vincent Gan vs Mohd Ikmal Mohd Nasir
Game 1

Photobucket
Vincent Gan vs Mohd Ikmal Mohd Nasir

Mohd Ikmal won the dice roll and both players, happy with their opening hands started off with an Armillary Sphere off a Plains and Mountain while Vincent started off with a Veinfire Borderpost off a Mountain and a Savage Lands on the following turn. The Borderpost is removed from the game with an Oblivion Ring but Vincent had another. The artifact was sacrificed to find lands before Mohd Ikmal played a Wild Nacatl and a Noble Hierarch.

Photobucket

Vincent, clearly not eager to take 4 or more damage from his opponent, destroyed the Nacatl with his Maelstrom Pulse, but his opponent made Vincent take 4 damage anyways, playing an Elspeth, Knight-Errant, giving his Hierarch +3/+3 and flying, and with exalted, the 4/5 druid took Vincent down to 16.

Vincent answered with a Bloodbraid Elf, whose cascade ability got Vincent a Sprouting Thrinax. The Elf attacked Elspeth to reduce her loyalty counters to 2 before Elspeth sent the Hierarch to the air again for another 4 damage. A Ranger of Eos found Mohd Ikmal 2 copies of Wild Nacatl who were played almost immediately right after.

Another Maelstrom Pulse destroyed both the 3/3 cat warriors while Vincent's 3/2 and 3/3 attacked to make sure that Elspeth will be forced to leave play before adding a Bloodhall Ooze to his side of the board. Vincent went to 8 from an attack from Mohd Ikmal's 4/3 Ranger thanks to exalted before he played and cracked another Armillary Sphere to further thin out his deck of basic lands.

Photobucket

Vincent's Ooze grew to a 3/3 and his army sent his opponent tumbling down to 11 as they went unblocked before he added another Sprouting Thrinax into his side of the board. Another Elspeth hit play, and the Ranger of Eos got +3/+3 and flying but a Terminate effectively nullified Mohd Ikmal's attack as Vincent attacked again with his army, along with his now 5/5 ooze. Mohd Ikmal desperately hung on, blocking the 5/5 with his Noble Hierarch but he had to take another 9 damage to tumble to just 2 but it was naught as his draw came up empty and it was time to move on to the 2nd game.

Game 2

Both players kept their opening hands again and a first turn Noble Hierarch met an early end thanks to a Magma Spray from Vincent. Double Borderposts hit play for Vincent on his 2nd turn while his opponent cracked his Naya Panorama for a Mountain.

Photobucket

An Oblivion Ring on his 3rd turn removed one of Vincent's Borderposts from the game while Vincent hit Mohd Ikmal for first blood with a 3/2 Haste Jund Hackblade. A Ranger of Eos fetched 2 Wild Nacatl while another Hackblade joined Vincent's board and both Hackblades were sent into the red zone and while 1 drew blood for another 3 damage the other died in combat with Ranger of Eos. Mohd Ikmal then played 3 copies of Wild Nacatl on his following turn as the crowd gasped and talked about how devastating a Maelstrom Pulse right now. Vincent drew slowly for his following turn, hid the card behind his hand and slowly peeled it off to see what it held and immediately played the Savage Lands he just drew, the black mana source that he desperately needed to be able to cast a Maelstrom Pulse.

Photobucket
Mohd Ikmal Mohd Nasir

He then held back his Hackblade and passed his turn. 2 of the Cat Warriors attacked in for 6 while an Ajani Vengeant made Vincent's Savage Lands unable to provide Vincent the black mana he might need to be that possible Maelstrom Pulse but it was for naught as Vincent managed to draw a Swamp and he did have the Maelstrom Pulse after all as the Pulse destroyed all of Mohd Ikmal's Wild Nacatls. Vincent's Hackblade attacked Ajani to 1 loyalty while on his following turn, Ajani made the Hackblade unable to be untapped while another Ranger of Eos hit play, finding a Noble Hierarch and a Wild Nacatl and then played the cat warrior. Vincent then played a Thought Hemorrhage, naming Hierarch, using the spell's damage to kill off Ajani.

Photobucket

Mohd Ikmal's 3/2 Ranger and 3/3 Wild Nacatl attacked Vincent and he went down to 11 as the Cat Warrior got killed by a Terminate. Another Ajani came into play, killed off Vincent's Hackblade and put his controller up to 17.

Photobucket

Vincent then played a Bloodbraid Elf which brought along a Sprouting Thrinax. The Elf attacked to kill off Ajani, as a Battlegrace Angel hit play for Mohd Ikmal, which threaten to finish off the game for him. But Vincent found a second Bloodbraid Elf which brought along a Putrid Leech, with which he sent to attack to put Mohd Ikmal to 8 as his Ranger died in combat trading with one of Vincent’s monsters. The Battlegrace Angel however quickly swung the life totals around to her controller’s favor, with him at 13 as Vincent stood at just 6.

As the game swung hard back and forth, it seemed that Mohd Ikmal might just force Vincent to play a 3rd game but Vincent’s deck would have none of it, as it coughed out a 3rd Bloodbraid Elf to allow Vincent to swung for exactly 13 damage to kill off Mohd Ikmal with a pumped Putrid Leech paying 2 life, going to 4. With no removal to stave off the impending doom, all he could do was to extend his hands to Vincent for congratulatory handshake.
